Carmelites in Action: Diversity of Missions & Ministries: Spiritual Centers

At three spiritual centers in the United States, Carmelite friars welcome pilgrims who come to learn more about their relationship with God and to pray and study their faith. These centers create a desert space for people to explore and restore their spiritual lives.

In Darien, Illinois, the Carmelite Spiritual Center offers retreats and special programs throughout the year, overnight accommodations, and meeting space for small to medium-size groups. The National Shrine of St. Therese, also located here, welcomes visitors with a glorious chapel, whose stained glass windows tell the story of the Carmelite journey toward God. It also has a unique collection of statues of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and a collection of relics, including the first photographs ever taken of a saint.

The Mount Carmel Spiritual Centre in Niagara Falls, Canada, offers an unparalleled view of the Horseshoe Falls and space for private retreats as well as participation in an ongoing program of retreats for women and men. The creative and searching programs help people dig deep into the spiritual well.

Carmel Retreat is in the rolling hills of Mahwah, New Jersey, once a private home, now home to private retreats as well as a host of programs and events. From diocesan retreat days to parish programs to religious formation programs, people from all around the mid-Atlantic area find a place to reflect and refresh their spirits. Fittingly, the current chapel was called the "monastery room" by the original owners, who had an interest in the movie industry and sometimes used their home as a silent movie set. With 76 acres and three buildings, Carmel Retreat offers space to explore inner landscapes.
