During Evening Prayer on Sunday, August 3rd, 2014, four candidates were welcomed into the Pre-novitiate Formation Program at Carith House in Hyde Park, Chicago, joining Ken Burchfiel, who joined the formation program in January, 2014. Prior to entering, this year’s class of pre-novices came from an interesting and diverse set of backgrounds ranging from a financial services professional, a paramedic and member of the Catholic Worker to a former Jesuit Volunteer and even an ordained priest from the Byzantine rite.

The men will spend this year in the pre-novitiate with their Formation Director, Br Daryl Moresco, O.Carm. The pre-novitiate prepares candidates for entry into the novitiate of the Carmelite Order. It is also a time for them to come to a deeper knowledge of themselves through prayer, reflection and ministry as they study and live the Carmelite way of life. They learn and grow in their understanding of the charism and spirituality of Carmel.
