Carmelites Meet in Peru

The Peruvian Commissariat of the PCM Province held their annual meeting of the members in Perú this week at the Villa Carmelitas in Lurin. Twenty-one members were present, including Thomas Gheta and Vincent Delo Betu of the Indonesian Province who are working in the Commissariat. Emilio Rodriguez participated as socius of the prior provincial.

Present for some sessions were Santos Antolino Mendez, Henry Mauricio Cienfuegos and Daniel Ulises Gonzalez. They were received into the novitiate on Thursday evening with a solemn sung vespers in the main chapel of the Villa Carmelitas. The three novices are from El Salvador. They were in the pre-novitiate program at Centro Xiberta for two years before applying for the novitiate.

On Tuesday, at the opening session, both Miguel Bacigalupo, Commissary Provincial and the prior provincial, William J. Harry, addressed the group. This was followed by reports from each of the communities. In the evening, attendees adjourned to the chapel where the prior provincial celebrated the Eucharist and Jerry Payea preached.
On Wednesday, Ed Adelmann celebrated an early morning mass and preached. The group had an excellent three-hour presentation by Dr. Mabel Magallanes as part of the Praesidium program. The afternoon and part of the next day was taken up with adding more detail to the Strategic Plan for the Commissariat.

Thursday began with Mass celebrated by Floristán Guerrero. Various entities of the Commissariat came to the Villa to make their annual reports, including the Finance Office, the Retreat House, and the Center for Spirituality. Before adjourning for Vespers and the Initiation of the Novitiate, the Statutes of the Commissary were reviewed and updated.

The meeting concluded on Friday with reports from the three schools sponsored by the Commissariat.
