February 1, 2019 |

On January 10, 2019, the new novitiate class for 2019 was initiated at Villa Carmelitas in Lurin, Peru. There are three members from El Salvador: José Manuel Santos Alvarado, Juan Esteban Rodríguez Benítez, and Miguel Ángel Guerra Martínez; and two members from Peru: Eduardo Antonio Diaz Espinoza and Franz Johnathan Leyva Bardalez.

On Friday morning, January 11, Fr. William J. Harry, O. Carm., the Prior Provincial, received the professions of the two members of the novitiate class of 2018: Adrian Flores Flores of Mexico and Geovanny Martinez of El Salvador. And on January 30, Fr. Miguel Bacigalupo, O. Carm., the Commissary Provincial in Peru, received the first profession of Evir Jesus Zambrano Rios, who joins the province from Venezuela.

On January 17, 2019, Fr. William J. Harry, O. Carm., received the solemn vows of Cecilio Hernandez before a filled chapel at the Hospital of the Carmelite Sisters of Divine Providence. St. Oscar Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador, was assassinated while celebrating Mass in the chapel. Cecilio is from the Metapan area and served a two-year internship at the Carmelite parish in Torreon following his novitiate in Lurin, Peru.

On Saturday, January 19, Bishop Oswaldo Escobar, OCD, the bishop of Chatalanango, ordained Cecilio to the diaconate in a beautiful ceremony in the chapel of Colegio Santa Teresa, of the Hermanas Misioneras de Santa Teresa, in San Marcos, El Salvador. Cecilio and the Prior Provincial celebrated his first Mass and gave the homily as deacon at Santa Marta de Betania, a parish located in Apopa, near to Centro Xiberta. After he completes his theological synthesis for his theology degrees from the University of Central America (UCA), he will be assigned to Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Joliet, IL, until his ordination to the priesthood.

Congratulations to each of these men and our assurances of prayers for your vocational journey in the months and years to come.
