Prayer: Spirituality

Why someone becomes a Carmelite instead of a Franciscan, Dominican, or Jesuit may depend quite a bit upon God's providence. But there are certain Gospel values that guide each group in our daily living and that's often what speaks to a seeker.

These values have been part of our tradition, our Carmelite way, since the beginning. Our greatest saints -- Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, and Therese of Lisieux -- often spoke of these ideas as they described their vocation as Carmelites on a journey: the ascent of the mountain, the little way, the interior castle.

We invite you to explore these ancient values as interpreted by Carmelites of today.

The presence of the living God

The centrality of Jesus Christ, the Word made human
The value of the human person
Faith, a light in the night
A communion of love
Prayer and contemplation
An appreciation of beauty
The Word of God and silence
