Gospel Passage: Matthew 6:1-18
by Rev. Gregory Houck, O.Carm.
Saint John of the Cross has a great quotation to begin this Season of Lent: “Curbing the tongue is better than fasting on bread and water.” In today’s Gospel, each person is saying the same thing: I’m making a donation, look at me; I’m praying, look at me; I’m fasting, look at me!” When my ego is in control, my every word or act proclaims look at me! Jesus could’ve gone on and on: judging others, gossiping, controlling others, angry words, ambition. Each proclaims, look at me! So let’s live Saint John of the Cross’ quotation (slightly modified) this Lent: “Curbing the look at me! is better than fasting on bread and water.”
