Do-it-yourself Ash Wednesday

February 16, 2021 |

1. Carefully burn last year’s palms.  Do this outside!

2. Allow the ashes to cool (about 1 minute) and say the Blessing Prayer over them.

3. Take a pinch of ash and drop it on the head of each family member.

4. Pray the “Our Father.”

Blessing Prayer Over the Ashes

O God, who desire not the death of sinners,
but their conversion,
mercifully hear our prayers
and in your kindness be pleased to bless these ashes,
which we intend to receive upon our heads,
that we, who acknowledge we are but ashes
and shall return to dust,
may, through a steadfast observance of Lent,
gain pardon for sins and newness of life
after the likeness of your Risen Son.
Who lives and reigns forever and ever.  Amen.

Join us each day throughout Lent for daily reflections on the day’s Gospel at, and for Night Prayer with the Carmelites at .
